  Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Unregistered version fully functional?
The unregistered version is fully functional. The unregistered version generates all index and family group pages. The number of generations displayed in the direct ancestor pedigree tree pages for unregistered users is limited to four generations. The features available to unregistered users are listed at Standard Features (Registered and Unregistered Versions)

Additional enhanced features available for registered users are listed at Enhanced Features (Registered Version)

  2. Making ghtindex your website index page.
If you checked the box "Make copy of ghtindex as index page" before processing you GEDCOM file and uploading from the ghtout subdirectory, when the your website index page (index.htm) is viewed and the user clicks one of the links it will take the user to a GedHTree generated HTML page. If the user clicks on the INDEX link on the GedHTree generated HTML page it will open ghtindex.htm.

  3. Adding a graphical link to GedHTree on your website.
You can add a graphical GedHTree homepage banner link on your web page if you wish. First, cut and paste the following HTML code to your web page:

        <CENTER><A HREF="http://www.gedhtree.com"><IMG SRC="gbanner.gif" ALT="GedHTree Homepage"></A></CENTER>

Next, save the image below by clicking the right button of your mouse on the GedHTree image, selecting "save picture(or image) as" gbanner.gif. Then, upload the image you have saved to your website along with the page in which you pasted the HTML code.

  4. Preventing the ghtout subdirectory from being overwritten.
When GedHTree is used for processing a GEDCOM file it first deletes all files that are in the ghtout subdirectory on your disk drive before generating the new files.

If you wish to save the contents of the ghtout subdirectory that were generated previously, change the name of the ghtout subdirectory before you process another GEDCOM file. A new ghtout subdirectory will be generated with all your new output files - leaving the renamed subdirectory unchanged.

  5. Linking to uploaded GedHTree generated pages.
To provide links from your homepage to GedHTree generated index and tree pages, link to the following pages:

The GedHTree generated index page is ghtindex.htm. The tree root pages for the four direct ancestor trees are tp1.htm, t2p1.htm, t3p1.htm, and t4p1.htm.

If your homepage is in a different directory than the index and tree root pages then you should link using the FULL URL ADDRESS (for example, http://www.mywebsite.com/mygenealogy/ghtindex.htm).

  6. Diacritical marks and special characters.
GedHTree processes the characters that are present in the GEDCOM file on a character basis. When you generate your GEDCOM file be sure and choose an output option (ANSI, UTF, etc.) so that the special characters in your genealogy database will be output to the GEDCOM file. In addition, most internet browsers allow you to change the encoding of characters viewed by clicking "Page (View) > Encoding" and selecting the appropriate encoding for your characters.

  7. Distinguishing between individuals with the same name.
How do I select the proper individual for the ancestor tree root or for photo links when I have more than one individual with identical names?

In both cases you can enter a birth year to distinguish between individuals with identical names.

  8. Generating a GEDCOM file that GedHTree can process.
Nearly all GEDCOMs use abbreviated tags, which GedHTree interprets. When you output your GEDCOM file, if your genealogy software has a check box for Abbreviate Tags, be sure that it has been CHECKED. If a check box for Indent Records is present - be sure it is UNCHECKED.

  9. Which photo thumbnail is chosen for display in the icon table on the ghtindex page?
Enter the photo image file name to appear as a thumbnail photo on the ghtindex page into the "Photo thumbnail for ghtindex page" text box on the "Photo Options" window. The Jpg or .Gif image file must be in the GedHTree\photos\ subdirectory. Leave blank for no thumbnail image on ghtindex page. Enable Photo Page Output must be checked.

  10. GedHTree will not process my GEDCOM file.   (Infrequent, but it does occur)
    There are three possible causes:

    1. The GedHTree ghtnnn.exe file may not have downloaded and installed correctly - go online and download again at http://www.gedhtree.com/gedhtree.htm#down and re-install by running ghtnnn.exe. The GedHTree Installer will guide you through the installation process. If you are a registered user you will have to re-enter your registration code. Gedhtree.exe and all of the supporting files have to remain in the same directory for GedHTree to run.

Run GedHTree by double-clicking on the GedHTree desktop icon, or, by clicking "Start > (All) Programs > GedHTree > GedHTree". The GEDCOM file you are processing should be on the same disk drive as gedhtree.exe.

    2. Your GEDCOM file may be in a format or contain data that GedHTree cannot process.

Try re-generating your GEDCOM file. Your GEDCOM file should be on the same disk drive as GedHTree.

GedHTree will process nearly all GEDCOM files, but, there is a small percentage that it cannot process. One solution is to import (input) your GEDCOM file into PAF genealogy database software (which is free) and export (output) a GEDCOM file which GedHTree can process. PAF is much more inclusive in which GEDCOM files it will accept as input. PAF is free and available at       http://www.familysearch.org/eng/paf/

    3. GedHTree may have an bug in it which didn't show up during extensive testing. If you send me your GEDCOM file as an email attachment, along with any error information, it will help to resolve the bug so that the next version of GedHTree can be improved.
