Heat and humidity can wreak havoc on our faces and bodies during the summer months, and in order to maintain smooth, healthy, vibrant skin, we have to be willing to work to protect ourselves from the adverse effects of the beautiful summer weather. Here are some tips for maintaining your skin’s health during the hottest season of the year.

Exfoliation is Key

Basic skincare calls for you to exfoliate your skin, true, but during extreme temperatures with dry and humid periods aplenty, it’s all the more important. Gently using a body or facial scrub to remove dead skin cells 2-3 times a week will allow for you to have glowing, soft skin not just during the summer, but year-round.

Drink More Water

While there’s no rule against drinking more water already considering how healthy it is for us, consuming the equivalent of 8 glasses of water daily will wash toxins out of your system, prevent dehydration, and also help you feel refreshed. It’s recommended to take a drink every 30 minutes, and there’s no shame in carrying around a handy refillable bottle when you go out. You’ll feel more energized and less bloated as a result of fewer toxins in your system, as well.

Cut Down on Makeup

Less is more when it comes to maintaining makeup-tinged skin during the summer. For lips, use a gloss or lip balm with an SPF of 15 to keep lips fresh and undamaged. Avoid eye makeup as much as possible, and instead of going for more layer-intensive looks, opt for a thinner, more natural approach. If you absolutely must apply foundation, be sure to also apply face powder with SPF to avoid patchy skin.


This is absolutely essential for the summer weather – and don’t just reach out for that year-old bottle tucked away in a cupboard somewhere. Be sure to annually replace your sunscreen with a new bottle, and opt for one featuring UVA and UVB products in either SPF 30 or SPF 70. Don’t forget to apply enough to adequately protect yourself from the elements – the equivalent of a shot glass full for your body, and a full teaspoon’s worth just for your face. Keep up with the sun as well – be sure to reapply every 1-2 hours that you spend in the sun.
