Moving your house always has the potential to be a stressful situation, regardless of how well you feel like you have planned or how smoothly you think things are going. Inevitably there are going to be some bumps in the road along the way and it’s important that you get out in front of these hiccups as early as possible to mitigate the damage that they can cause. This is especially true when you are getting ready to pack up your home, which is why we’ve included these tips and tricks you’ll want to follow along with during your next move to make things a lot easier!
Plan before you pack anything
A lot of people dive right into packing up their rooms (and many do this last minute, something will touch on in a moment) without any real thought or planning ahead of time. This is a major mistake you have to avoid at all costs.
Instead of just lumping different things into boxes as you get to them, plan out where you want your stuff to go in your new place and how to pack everything safely and securely so that it gets there without any issues along the way. Keep the items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes, neatly organize and label all of your boxes and containers, and make sure to load the truck in the “first on, last off” pattern.
Don’t wait until the last minute
The best way to add almost overwhelming stress and pressure to an already stressful and pressure packed move is to wait until the very last minute to pack. We all have a tendency to wait as long as we can and procrastinate when it comes to packing, but that’s the last thing that you’re going to want to do.
Tackle each room as early as possible and get everything but your non-essentials all packed away and ready to be loaded at least three or four days before you actually expect to move. This will really streamline things significantly, will speed things up late you wouldn’t believe, and will eliminate almost all of the stress that comes from packing altogether.
Never pack anything you won’t keep at your new place
Most of us feel like we have to pack absolutely everything in our old place and bring it to our new one even if the first thing we are going to do is throw that stuff away. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Never waste time packing anything that you are simply going to throw out as soon as you arrive at your new place, and certainly don’t ever waste time or energy actually moving that stuff, either.
Hiring a reliable moving company can help prevent the stress of moving day. While it is a little more of an investment than paying your friends with pizza and drinks at the end of the day, it will be well worth it when all of your items arrive at your new home organized and undamaged.
